BLŪMĒ – Everything Is Going To Be OK: Vehement fuzz-rock and high octave energy

The debut album of Berlin-based BLŪMĒ is laced with eco-anxiety and existentialism.

First, a warning: contrary to the positive affirmation of the album’s title, everything is not going to be okay, and BLŪMĒ make this abundantly clear.

Okay we get it. Life is chaotic, and we’ll never fulfil our desires.

On Thin Ice, the Berlin-based surf rock punk band lament global warming in a distressingly poignant way: “Watch out, the ice is melting,” the frontman sings, “have you learned to swim alone?” Yes, we know things are not looking good. “How could you find the time to make your dreams come true?” they chant on the chanson-triste Lethergy.

Okay, we get it. Life is chaotic, and we’ll never fulfil our desires. But however depressing the lyrics of these fervent go-getters are, they still manage to impress with their debut album, a record of vehement fuzz-rock filled with infectious choruses and high-octane energy. Even if everything is not going to be okay, with music like this kicking around, maybe it doesn’t matter. Just turn the volume up, and think of better times.
