Weather warning: Storm “Zoltan” sweeps through Berlin

The heavy winds and rain that hit Berlin on Thursday morning are expected to continue through Friday night.

According to the German Weather Service, Berlin and Brandenburg should prepare for some nasty weather at the start of the weekend. Wind gusts up to 95 kilometers per hour are expected for Friday morning. Things should clear up somewhat in the afternoon, but heavy rain and sleet could become an issue in some areas of the city.

An official Level II weather warning has been issued for Berlin, and fire department rescue workers have had their hands full. In the early hours of Friday morning, the Autobahn A111 along the state border of Berlin and Brandenburg had to be completely closed off after a large tree fell across both lanes of the highway around midnight. The freeway was not very busy at the time however, and traffic was not majorly disrupted. The extreme weather is expected to stabilise by Christmas Eve, and, at this time, no disruptions to flights leaving Berlin have been recorded.
