When you think of Berlin architecture, you might not think first of the rather Parisian phenomenon of Art Nouveau. But the highly-decorative ‘New Style’ (or ‘Jugendstil’ in German) did beautify the German capital at the turn of the twentieth century, with its characteristic elements: depictions of the elegaic, of mythical creatures (especially dragons!) and of animals from far-flung lands, all laden with folkloric significance. Nymphs, owls, winding branches, Latin mottos, and anything Egyptian, abounded.
And thank goodness: a lot of Berlin’s Jugendstil is still to be seen! On this tour, we will marvel at a dozen of Berlin’s most beautiful residential buildings in the peaceful and elegant neighbourhood of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf.
Our tour will be meeting at Meeting point: the corner of Pariser Strasse and Bundesallee (right outside the Spichernstrasse U9 station), Bundesallee 14.. We will meet on July 19 at 14:00 and leave by 14:10.
The tour will end at the corner of Giesebrechtstrasse and Kurfürstendamm, near to the Adenauerplatz station, Kurfürstendamm 62.
