The big white tent shall be pitched again on Tempelhofer Feld for 12 days of circus performances from across Europe – and it’s a big tent with plenty of room for all sorts.
Among these 51 performances, you’ll see Marianna de Sanctis consider the conditions of motherhood as a cultural worker in her one-woman show Mother.Woman.Artist, all the while not ceasing with her hula hooping. Gravir by circus company Les Quat’fers en l’air offers two alpine climbers-cum-acrobats contemplating the urge to venture higher and higher – and leap, for a moment, into flight – even as they know they must ultimately fall to the earth. Cirque Exalté’s Foutoir Céleste blends BMX, acrobatics and trapeze in a jubilant exhibition.
Companie Moost invites the audience to a dinner party that turns into a set of surreal landscapes, acrobatics, and slapstick comedy in Natures Mortes. For human mountains and seismic group spectacle, there’s Meander from Knot on Hands, Martha & Kim and Felix Zech, which translates geological rhythms into leaps and holds and fascinating collective stunts. Also considering the relationship between circus and ecology is Memoirs of Mud, where soil, sound and sisterhood come together in this curious encounter with the stuff of the earth.
It’s a true celebration of quirkiness and idiosyncrasy at this festival of contemporary circus whose spectacle embraces its performers’ eccentricities.
