Psychedelic irony and tight musicianship are in full supply on Goblyns’ second LP, Three Sisters. Sitting somewhere between The Budos Band and Khruangbin, the Berlin group’s sound is rooted in 60s psychedelia, littered with funk chops and slick guitar riffs. For any instrumental band, strong melodies are essential, and fortunately for Goblyns, melodies are their speciality.
Beyond the polished surface, Three Sisters slows the tempo in places, lending the album a deeper emotional weight. But let’s address the elephant in the room: are they really instrumental?
On this record, drummer Francis Broek lays down some unexpectedly sweet falsetto vocals on tracks like ‘With You’, ‘The Move’ and the aptly titled ‘No Words’. It leaves you wondering: with a voice that tender, why are they holding him back?
