The rich style that embodies the diverse and enigmatic world of Iranian-German singer Pari Eskandari, formerly known as Pari San, is layered with deeply political themes. Having fled Tehran with her parents at the age of three, the producer has become a leading figure in Berlin’s experimental scene and is signed to Tricky’s False Idols. Through her music, like with the single Drehmoment (co-produced with Tricky) released earlier this year, the artist aims to bring to light the civil rights injustices women living in Iran face.

In dealing with themes like these, Eskandari has created an epic, ethereal and avant-garde sound, heavy on dramatic electronics and experimental effects, which amplify her vocals in a haunting and supernatural way. It’s a singular style, both poetic and intellectual, that blends together Persian influences, darker Berlin aesthetics and modern R‘n’B sensibilities. Performing at Berlin’s PopKultur Festival in August, Eskandari is fast becoming one to watch.
