How did your musical project come about?
Although music was always a great love of mine, I never seriously considered that I could become a thriving artist until performing at A Song For You’s public debut at the Volksbühne in March 2022. It was a beautiful a-ha moment, for which I am forever grateful. From that point on, my journey went from one synchronicity to the next.
Describe your sound in one sentence.
Rooted entirely in the African-American experience, my sound is hip-hop infused with gospel, jazz, soul and prose.
What topics do you deal with in your music?
Autobiographical in nature, my music always centres around myself and the experiences I’ve faced as a queer Black woman. I often confront topics of faith, queer love and the search for belonging.
What are some of your favorite venues to play in Berlin?
Huge shoutout to Fluxbau – a beautiful venue where the energy is always right. I would also like to give a huge shoutout to 90mil, a community-built art space for disciplines of all kinds. They place a huge emphasis on keeping agency and accessibility in the hands of creatives; playing there was such a wonderful example of what artist-to-artist ecosystems look like.
How would you describe Berlin’s music scene?
Robust! A little bit of everything with fresh ideas and perspectives constantly coming in and out of the picture. It’s so amazing to me how the steady influx of Ausländer constantly brings something new to the German music scene in general.
Are there any Berlin artists you’d like to collaborate with?
No one combines poetry and hip-hop quite like Selassie does. Something tells me I have much to learn from his creative process.
What’s something unexpected or strange that inspires your music?
I believe Gospel music is the most beautiful genre this world has to offer, and my experience growing up in the Black church has shaped me as an artist in more ways than one.
What are you currently working on?
With much gratitude, I recently signed a deal with booking agency F-Cat Productions, and we are gearing up for an exciting year of shows and festivals.
