Güner Künier’s ‘Yaramaz’: A defiant coming-of-age story

Blending punk energy with synth-wave influences, 'Yaramaz' cements Güner Künier as a fearless voice in contemporary music. ★★★★

Although its title translates to “good for nothing”, Güner Künier’s second record is far from it. Replete with her classic, raw electro post-punk edge (think Devo meets The Slits), Künier thrashes out menacing, bombastic musings in both English and Turkish. More than just an album, Yaramaz is a coming-of-age story, forged through her electro riot-grrrl aesthetic.

Originally from Izmir, Turkey, Künier uses this record as a testimony as to how she liberated herself from societal expectations and cements her as a force to be reckoned with in the underground synth-punk scene. Yaramaz is both a battle cry and a call to shake things up – because Künier is anything but “good for nothing”.
