Video: Expatriarch Generations season finale

Thu, Oct 15 sees the last instalment of Expatriarch's Generations. Dance out the season with Tama Sumo and her pick The Neighbourhood Character at Schwuz and check out the two artists here first in a video meeting of the minds.

Expatriarch’s Generations series works on one straightforward principle: the genre and gender bending radio show handpicks an established artist, who in turn selects their favourite up-and-comer and introduces them to the baying masses.

Assuming the role of mentor for the series’ finale is one of the city’s finest selectors, Tama Sumo. She’s carved a name for herself over the last two decades playing majestically arranged sets interlaced with classic house, techno, afrobeat and disco. Having held down regular slots at Tresor and Café Moskau in the past, and a current residency at Panorama Bar since 2004, she’s au fait with what it takes to get dance floors thronging.

Acting as protégé on the night is American expat Ari Robey-Lawrence, better known as The Neighbourhood Character. Relatively fresh on the scene, her 2014 collaboration with Tama Sumo and Lakuti under the moniker Tarantism birthed a pulsating 808 remix of The Knife’s “Ready To Lose”. This summer she also joined forces with Eric Douglas Porter’s avant-garde Afrikan Sciences project and put out a 12” EP.

Packing a style akin to the off-kilter jazz beats Peckham’s Wbeeza and Henry Wu brought to the fore, her tunes are edgy, experimental and undeniably soulful. If you feel for whetting your appetite before the ladies take to the decks, you can watch them in conversation above. Ensuring things go out with a bang, DJs Joey Hansom and Chance & Dark (Evvol) will be on turntable duties too.
