The streets of Berlin have been ringing with the sounds of the tropics for several years now. Along with the likes of recent talents, such as Coco Maria and Dengue Dengue Dengue! – who, amongst others, have helped Latin musical styles infiltrate the city’s club scene – DJ, label-head and journalist Daniel Haaksman is a Berlin mainstay.
A blistering album of tropical bass hotness
Haaksman has been functioning as a cultural exchange specialist for several decades, repurposing and introducing contemporary music from abroad into Berlin club-format pieces. And Sonido Lava (lava sound) is no exception.
On the new record, Haaksman cribs various modern pan-Latin sounds – from Caribbean dembow rhythms to Cuban rumbas – to create a blistering album of tropical bass hotness, scorched in Haaksman’s trademark style. ★ ★ ★
