Originally from Tbilisi, Georgia, Berlin-based alt-pop artist Creams is fast become a global star, receiving praise from the likes of i-D, NME, and MusikExpress.
As a musician, fashion and underground culture icon, Creams, aka. Natia Chichinadze writes, performs and produces all of her own music. With a playful, RnB, and hyperpop style, obvious comparisons can be drawn to the likes of FKA Twigs, and Grimes, yet there is still a residing style that remains her own.
With a new single out, a nostalgia-inducing, infectious melody called ‘Need to Talk’, Exberliner caught up with Creams to find out how she acclimatised to the Berlin winter, the music scene, and what venues she enjoys frequenting the most.
Despite the gloomy weather, I have grown to love this city in my own way.
What brought you to the German capital?
I relocated to Berlin with the intention of immersing myself in the local music scene, as it has always been of great interest to me. Also, I study music production here. The city’s vibrant music culture had long held a certain allure for me, and I wanted to be closer to the action.
How’s the Berlin winter working out for you?
To be honest, the lack of sunlight has been the most difficult aspect for me to adjust to. In Tbilisi, I positioned all of my gear in a corner of my studio that received the most sunlight during the day because I thrive on sunshine and it makes me feel alive. However, Berlin is quite different. In the first year, I found myself feeling quite depressed, but now things are much better. Despite the gloomy weather, I have grown to love this city in my own way.
Of the venues I have been to, my favourites for live performances are Gretchen and Loophole
Did you find it an inspirational time to knuckle down and get some work done?
For me, inspiration often arises while actively engaged in a task. However, the lack of sunshine made it challenging to get started on anything at all. But once I pushed myself to begin working or experimenting with new sounds and ideas- I found that productivity flowed constantly.
Is there a community of like-minded, new pop artists in the city that you associate with?
There are probably a ton of people in the industry, but honestly, I don’t know many of them. I’m hoping to start making some gigs in March, and maybe I’ll get to meet some cool folks. Even though I come off as outgoing, I’m actually pretty shy when it comes to meeting new people.
What’s your new single about?
This song reflects the challenges we face in life. This song takes the listener on a journey through my personal experiences and emotions. The chorus is a powerful call to action, encouraging the listener to persevere and overcome their struggles. The verses delve into the feelings of self-doubt and uncertainty that can arise when facing difficult circumstances. The bridge provides deeper introspection, exploring the fears and insecurities that lie beneath the surface. Are you listening to this song alone, or do you have a support system to help you through life’s challenges?
What other plans do you have for the new year?
I admire those who are able to plan their lives, including their activities for the next year. Personally I have no idea what I’m gonna do for the next year, but I hope to organise live performances in Berlin asap
And finally, what are your favourite Berlin venues?
I haven’t had the opportunity to visit many venues, but there are a few that have caught my attention. I am particularly interested in visiting Trauma Bar as it appears to be both lively and visually appealing. However, of the venues I have been to, my favourites for live performances are Gretchen and Loophole.
