Berlin-based DJ and sound-sculpturist Kangding Ray has long been one of the most progressive producers when it comes to electronic music. Although his most recent musings have fallen under the umbrella of techno, his earlier, more ambient releases are some of the best records to have ever come from Berlin. Zero carries on doing what the artist does best: making brutalist, future-sounding techno with deep, complex and forceful production work.
With its psychedelic ambience and driving energy, Zero is very reminiscent of the works of Future Sound of London, and other early techno progenitors. Littered amongst the brutal techno cuts are beautiful ambient outcuts, reminding us that Ray can do ethereal sound designs, too. This artist is a standout in the current outcropping of techno producers, and Zero is another stunning reminder of this. ★★★★
