Be a Better Man: Wild and versatile post-punk tunes

Indie rock trio Lawns' debut album 'Be a Better Man' is a smashing, guitar-heavy confrontation of topics like fragile masculinity and mental health. ★★★★

You’ve probably caught this boiler suit-wearing British trio making a raucous appearance in one of Berlin’s many indie venues at some point over the last couple of years. With their characteristic noise-rock pop sound and intense and excellent drummer (Tobias Humble, ex-Gang of Four), Lawns shine with songs that are both melodic and fun and brutally heavy.

On their debut record, the trio flaunt their songwriting prowess, switching between catchy pop ditties (Bottled Up), angry-punk songs (Eggshells) and crazed, post-punk tunes (You), all with wild rhythms that weave in and out of the music.

What makes this band stand out even more is their lack of a bass guitarist. Although it often goes unnoticed thanks to their craft and production, it does send a message out there to the city’s bass players (this writer included). So hey, Lawns, be better men, and get a bass player! ★★★★
