Further towards the Spree to the more bürgerlich west of the Moabit is Café Fiaker, a small Vienna-inspired café with curly inscriptions on the façade and old-fashioned iron furniture and lovely outdoor seating.
Apart from its great location opposite a Kneipe that blasts turbo-Schlager nonstop, Fiaker boasts an impressive assortment of excellent house-roasted coffees in every style, from Viennese to Italian and Parisian (try the ‘melange’: topped with a luscious mix of whipped cream and foam for €2.20, or the creamy iced coffee with vanilla ice cream and homemade whipped cream for €3.50). Here, espresso goes for a mere €1.
The cafe also sells an attractive choice of sweet treats – from average homemade strudel (€3, on Sundays only), fruit cakes and over-cinnamoned pastel de nata to more sophisticated-looking tarts and cakes from reputed Italian dessert maker Bindi (mostly €2.80 apiece), like a rather tasty house-defrosted lemon curd tart with baiser or velvety cheese or chocolate variations.
