Restaurants in Berlin are constantly pushing the envelope to create tasty dishes that will leave you wanting more. But what about the solid staple foods that will make you smile? Here are some of the places taking it back to basics for good tasting food.

Yume

Head to this café/diner for classic sandos (Japanese sandwiches), the likes of which you won’t find anywhere else in Berlin: fluffy egg salad or crispy chicken katsu in pillowy milk bread, or fruit for those with a sweet tooth. The menu also has katsu curry and hearty Japanese croquettes.

TiramiGiù

Baker Giuseppe Bonaccini gets seriously creative with tiramisu at this new spot, integrating flavours like chamomile while also crafting vegan and savoury versions. You’ll also find treats like Italian pies and cakes, and a Saturday brunch.

Fergy

Square, slightly deeper-pan Detroit-style (but not Chicago-level) pizza is finally available in Berlin out of this Moritzplatz-adjacent window. Fluffy sourdough bases come topped with classics like sausage or mushroom. There’s also some out-of-the-box options, like the “Louisiana” with corn, tarragon and crawfish.

House of Rye

This bar and shop comes from Spreewald-based Stork Club, the first rye whiskey distillers in Germany. You can sample their whiskey alongside other creations like rye gin or whiskey sour liqueur. When it’s open as a bar, Friedrichshain’s Goldfisch joins to mix crafty cocktails.

Spice Junction

Is Berlin’s best Indian street food being served in an unassuming Schöneberg supermarket? Head down to Spice Junction to find out. This supermarket only opened last December, but it has quickly become a go-to destination for Berlin’s Indian community. They serve lunch offerings throughout the week, but things get really interesting on Saturdays when they bring in a snack bar and serve up freshly cooked vegetarian street food classics like Samosa Chaat, Panipuri, Isli Sambar and Masala Dosa.
