Lunch in Berlin: The best new openings of 2022

2022 saw the opening of some exciting new lunch spots across the city. From caviar to vegan Korean comfort food, this is where we liked to grab lunch last year.

Dashi: Chinese Breadsticks and Japanese-American Sandwiches

At chic diner Dashi, expect soft-crispy potato croquettes swimming in thick and creamy Japanese curry sauce, deliciously baked Chinese breadsticks (Youtiao) served with comforting warm rice porridge congee and spicy Szechuan fries with coriander mayo sauce. The Invalidenstraße spot also serves Japanese-American style sandwiches, which you can enjoy with a show stopper pastel-green melon granita – garnished with a maraschino cherry of course.

Dal Tokki: Low-key, vegan Korean food

With a single daily set menu made of 100% vegan Korean classics, Dal Tokki is all about simplicity and doing the basics right. Start your meal off with a savoury brothy soup, followed by a hearty main like crispy mung bean pancakes served with rice and kimchi. This isn’t your typical hyped up, trendy Korean fried chicken spot. Instead, Dal Tokki is serving up unpretentious, home-style vegan Korean comfort food, all for a pretty affordable price.

Smashburger: Get stuck in

The owners of Berlin’s much-loved Goldies on Oranienstrasse have now blessed us with Smashburger. Each burger is made with a crispy thin patty, topped with homemade pickles and fresh lettuce. They even get their buns from the same people who supply Shake Shack in New York.

Pearlossol: Caviar for lunch

Pearlossol is the ultimate spot for a luxurious midday caviar feast, but you may be surprised by the accessible price range. Situated in Berlin’s famous KaDeWe department store, take a seat along its opulently-designed bar and choose from their selection of sturgeon, trout, char, salmon or pike caviar. More than a responsible price tag, Pearlossol also prioritises sustainability, sourcing much of their caviar from within Germany.

Goldadelux: Aromatic sabich

If you’re not yet familiar with sabich, it’s a hearty Israeli sandwich of aubergine, boiled eggs, potatoes, tahini, hot sauce and mango chutney stuffed into a soft pita or laffa bread. Near Kreuzberg’s Wassetorplatz, Goldadelux is serving up this rich sandwich with smoked harissa, preserved lemon and a generous heap of lightly pickled onions.

La Ola: Mexican seafood with a light touch

An extension of Taqueria el Oso (one of Berlin’s best taco spots), La Ola brings high-quality Mexican seafood to the Markthalle Pfefferberg. Shrimp lightly marinated in chilli and lime served on a mini toasted tortilla and smoked tuna generously topped with avocado are some of what you can expect at La Ola. The chefs are just as serious about sustainability as they are about flavour and are committed to working with ethical small-scale fisheries mostly in the North Sea.

Mibap: Bento Boxes and Hot Pots

Mibap serves up Taiwanese fusion at its finest. Think sticky rice and seaweed sandwiches filled with homemade sweet potato taro patties, veggies and kimchi. Or bento boxes with a wide variety of comfort food classics, like chicken with honey barbecue sauce. Their Hot Pots are the perfect lunch to share, with a selection of meat and veg for you to cook in broth at your table.

Kin Za: Cosy Georgian cuisine

At Kin Za, you can try some Georgian classics like khinkali (juicy meat dumplings with broth) and khachapuri ajarul (a creamy, cheese-filled flatbread). Watch chefs knead fresh dough in the open kitchen and finish off your meal with something from Kin Za’s wide selection of traditional Georgian wines.

Margarete: Lunchtime classics

Museum cafes are sadly often a letdown. Margarete, however, is certainly worth a visit in its own right. Set over two floors in the ‘Documentation Centre for Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation‘ on Askanischer Platz, it has an adjoining deli with sandwiches and salads to go. The café itself has an inviting menu of lunch favourites, like quiche, soups and salads.
