I Know a Little Place

Love Deluxe’s Eddy Bishop and Bayo Adafin’s favourite Berlin bars and restaurants

The owners of Love Deluxe share their top Berlin food and drink spots, from cheap eats to fine wine and gourmet doughnuts.

Love Deluxe mixes up influences from the US south and cuisines of Africa and the South Pacific. Here’s where its owners eat when they’re not behind the burners or shaking up tropical cocktails.

There’s a couple of restaurants we think are underrated. First, Thai place Khao Taan in Friedrichshain. With this food quality and price point, how are people not busting down the door?

Then there’s Plus Acht Zwo in Neukölln. Their fried chicken is insane and the portions are massive. Some people say it’s expensive, but we don’t agree. The variety of the menu is insane as well: the spicy calamari salad is mind blowing, and there’s mussel soup and mandu, too.

For a cheap eat, we love the Imren outpost on Wiener Straße. It’s just good every time, whether you want something cheap and comforting, or you’re drunk and you want to smash something into your face.

For a drink, we’d go to Cantine Sant’Ambroeus in Prenzlauer Berg. It’s an Italian wine bar with mostly natural wines. The owner, Marco, is great. Compared to a lot of wine places in Berlin, he has such a breadth of knowledge and an inventory across vintages. They have good charcuterie as well.

One place we could visit every week or more is Aroma on Kantstraße. Eddy loves Chinese food, and they just get it right. The only problem is the vibe; they never have any music playing!

We’d also say Ma-Makan in Kreuzberg. Bayo used to go boxing every Tuesday and would head there to smash some chicken wings or Malaysian laksa after.

Our favourite bakery-slash-coffee place is Atelier Dough in Kreuzberg – excellent coffee, and their doughnuts are crazy. Güven, the owner, is always creating, there’s always something new on his menu. It’s a treat-yourself kinda place; the doughnuts aren’t cheap, but, fuck, they’re good.

A place we’d trek across town for is Die Wein by Nollendorfplatz. It’s a small place with a really beautiful selection of wines. The owner, Theresa, is such a good hostess and chef. Especially on weekends, she’ll do a selection of foods, maybe a bouillabaisse or finger food.

To buy meat, we almost don’t want to give this away, but Blutwurstmanufactur in Neukölln is a fucking excellent Fleischerei. They have an incredible selection of sausages, Blutwurst, pork products, pâtés, mustard. They have a bain marie with things like Leberkäse or roast pork that they slice up and put on bread with mustard to eat there.
