In the world of celebrity chefs, it’s probably fair to say that Jamie Oliver is situated towards the Ottolenghi end of the spectrum – he’s wholesome, that is. Performative shouting à la Ramsay and Raue? Nuh-uh. Self-important wankery like that of Mälzer, Oliver’s fellow protégé under legendary Italian chef Gennaro Contaldo? No sir.

Oliver’s cooking (and personality) is known to be calm, grounded and entirely accessible. Berliners can now get a taste of this culinary nonchalance, often inspired by Italian and Asian cuisine, at Germany’s very first (and the world’s third) Jamie Oliver Kitchen, which is officially opening its doors this month. Admittedly, the Oliver doesn’t man the kitchen himself, but all recipes are signed off on by him.

For some people, this might go without saying, but Jamie Oliver is not famous for over-the-top fine dining; the English chef stands for dishes that cater to every palate – elevated comfort food, if you will. With some nods to German cuisine, and always offering veggie and vegan options, starters (€8-21) include such delicacies as sesame beef tataki, fried squid with sriracha, and cheesy spätzle croquettes (better than they sound).

Mains (€15-25) range from harissa-roasted cauliflower and nori salmon to mushroom risotto and treats from the grill, featuring sirloin and rib-eye steaks (ca. €30). For those feeling less brave, Oliver – or rather his German franchise team – has thought of you, too: there are burgers (ca. €18), pizza (including a currywurst variant, which has yet to prove its popularity; ca. €16) and salads (ca. €14). For dessert (ca. €10), make sure to get the delight that is the strudel ring: pizza dough filled with apple compote and a scoop of vanilla ice cream in the middle.

Say what you will about celebrity-chef franchise restaurants, but this one – located on Schiffbauerdamm, with views of the glistening Spree and candle-lit bars right next door – might prove perfect for an affordable date night in Mitte.
