Just walk by Glaserei Bar & Grill, and you’ll see its namesake above the door: Glaserei Landeshaupt. Since 1904, the Glaserei Landeshaupt has been providing glassworks to Mehringdamm. After restaurateurs Markus Schädel and Albrecht Sprenger took over the space, they’ve been serving up great (and comparatively simple) dishes to enjoy with friends.
Floor to ceiling panoramic windows do more than offer patrons a view of Berlin, it also serves as Glaserei’s best marketing technique. Walking by and seeing people laughing and chatting over the perfectly grilled sea bass is reason enough to pull up a chair and enjoy a few beers.
Of course you can, and you should, stop by the bar just for a beer (or a glass of wine). But then you would miss out on the fish soup with saffron or the cannellini beans with baked garlic. The kitchen, which isn’t really a kitchen, consists of a small preparation room halfway up the stairs, and the grill right behind the counter. What is put on the grill changes daily – octopus, bratwurst, sea bass or green asparagus.
This place is one for the neighbourhood. These plates cost 12, or at most 15 euros. The owners cared about crafting a restaurant that is affordable and interconnected. And it shows. This dedication to the community is why the restaurant is already so well attended and so diverse; old, young, retired, or newly employed, this community gathering place is for everyone.
