Desi Diner’s Shabnam Syed on her favourite place to eat and drink in Berlin

Before she opens Desi Diner in Neukölln this month, Berlin’s premier Pakistani chef Shabnam Syed shares her own go-to places to dine.

A place I could eat at every week is Aleppo Supper Club, they have one dish that I just love: makluba. It’s layered with rice, minced lamb, aubergine, roasted cashews, and it comes with mint yoghurt.

For a special occasion, I love Khao Taan, the Thai restaurant in Friedrichshain. They made a special meal for my wedding, and chef Gaan puts a lot of effort into the menu and the dishes; everything always tastes so fresh.

For baked goods, there’s not many bakeries around where I live in Alt-Treptow, but I do like Masha’s Bagels. We get fresh bagels from there and then we take them home and make our own fillings.

For fast food, try Berlin Tantuni, a Turkish place near Boddinstraße. They have thinly sliced meat with red onions and parsley in a durum or a baguette. The baguette is nice and soft, and they squeeze a little bit of lemon on it.

I’ll always go out of my way to visit Nibs Cacao in Charlottenburg, by Ku’damm. I’d never had good churros in Berlin, but both the churros and dipping chocolate are amazing here.

An underrated restaurant is Mikrokosmos in Kreuzberg. They have insects on the menu, but you don’t have to eat them. When I went, I had a cherry ceviche, which is not something you’d think of. They work really hard and the food is fantastic.

For brunch, annelies in Kreuzberg is up there for pancakes, but I also really like Love Deluxe in Neukölln. They have a good concept with Afro-Caribbean, Pacific Island and American influences all put together. They have an amazing beef shank sandwich, too – I think they’re a bit underrated.

For groceries, I love this Pakistani place in Moabit, called TS Foods. They have different African, Pakistani and Indian spices, with a big variety and fair prices. There’s also Olmo, an Italian store on Mariannenstraße in Kreuzberg. You can get cheeses, meats, olives, and packaged things. But they also do sandwiches, and you just tell them what you want on it. They even do picnics.
