Natural wine: some love it, others call it the zenith of snobbery. Chris and Anika Foster, however, might just change the minds of the latter camp. In late October, the Anglo-German married couple opened Blanc de Fuck just a few blocks off Herrmannplatz – an exceedingly accessible natural wine bar that completes their business triptych, which includes an online shop and a brick-and-mortar location, both named MORE Natural Wine.
The “temporary shitty wine bar”, as the lettering at the entrance lets you know, is supposed to evoke the feel of an English pub, Chris says. While the candlelit, art-laden space definitely feels more like a cosy Berlin bar, there’s certain qualities typical of a pub, like the big board listing the wines on tap (including the bar’s namesake, Blanc de Fuck), and the lack of table service. There’s also gimmicks like the ‘Free Wine Rollerz’ on Saturdays and Sundays from 2-5pm, where customers get their tap wine order – no matter how large – free of charge if they roll a six.

Next to the wines on tap, Blanc also offers exactly one beer intended as a palate cleanser and, more importantly, a staggering stock of 240 bottles in the back, all catalogued in the thick, thumb-sized menus with in-depth descriptions of each wine and available by the glass. How does that work, we hear you say? “If there’s any left, I usually drink them,” says Chris in his self-described “BBC English”. With that much relatability, don’t let the owner’s accent deter you – he’s as unpretentious as Blanc de Fuck itself.
If you’re ready to let go of your posh prejudice, this is this place to go – but don’t wait too long. With their temporary lease, Blanc may not be allowed to age like fine wine, though fine wine is what you’ll find here, no doubt.
