After his recent puzzling stint directing a live concert for stadium rock heavyweights The Killers, Werner Herzog rolls into town for a weekend of events, the centrepiece being two nights of talks in Berlin’s Volksbühne theatre on October 19 and 20.
Funded by the Hauptstadt Kulturfonds under the name Conquest of the Useless (Eroberung des Nutzlosen, Oct 19 & Oct 20, 20:00), Herzog will read from and discuss notes taken during the notoriously troubled production of his 1982 classic Fitzcaraldo. The talks will be accompanied by live music under the direction of Dutch musician Ernst Reijsege.
While these shows will be conducted mostly auf Deutsch, there are plenty of English speaking events to coincide: The Einstein Forum will be running a free full day symposium on Oct 26 (10:00-18:30) at the Film and Television Museum at Potsdamer Platz. Featuring lectures in both English and German and covering a wide range of topics from The Future of Storytelling to Quit that Moody Brooding – Werner Herzog in America.
To coincide with the symposium, Kino Arsenal will be showing a selection of Herzog’s recent English language documentaries including the famously Oscar snubbed Grizzly Man (Oct 23, 19:00), his recent 4-part TV show Death Row (Oct 21, 19:00 / with discussion, Oct 22, 19:00) and the mighty Encounters At The End Of The World (Oct 24, 19:00).
