Berlin’s pantheon of outdoor cinema offers the perfect level of exertion after a long dog day’s swelter: a scrap over the best sun lounger is as strenuous as it’s likely to get.

Start midsummer in style at FREILUFTKINO KREUZBERG: the chilly intrigue of Ex Machina (Jul 12) puts a smart sci-fi shiver in the air, while Jurassic World (Jul 18) and Kingsman: The Secret Service (Jul 25) provide dafter blockbuster fare. Masterfully wild-eyed Mad Max (Aug 22) cuts through the end-of-summer slump with grinding grace, while wrenching doc Amy (Aug 23) brings us back to brutal if honey-voiced reality as it charts Amy Winehouse’s short and volatile life. Tenderer visual pleasures abound in Barry Lyndon’s baroque gorgeousness (Aug 25).

VOLKSPARK HASENHEIDE’S broad OV programme offers a preview of fantastic Fassbender-led neo-Western Slow West (Jul 27). If you still haven’t caught hurtling, one-take Berlin wonder Victoria, get onboard in the presence of tough lead Frederick Lau and the rest of the male cast on Jul 25.

Just can’t get enough Freiluft? Those seeking a more absolute escape from Berlin can join the perambulatory MOBILE KINO (otherwise nesting at Urban Spree, Insel Berlin and Grießmühle) for an out-of-town cinematic weekender (Jul 24-26) at former GDR holiday camp Klingemühle, where sci-fi monolith 2001: A Space Odyssey and surreal disco confection The Legend of Kaspar Hauser head the programme.

If you’d rather keep it Berlin-based, don those dancing shoes: documentary Pulp: A Film About Life, Death and Supermarkets screens at Neue Heimat on Jul 11, followed by a Q&A session with director Florian Habicht and Jarvis Cocker (who will also man an afterparty DJ set).
