Not (just) in Tel Aviv: What to see at Israeli Film Festival 2014

This year's Israeli Film Festival Berlin puts young indie filmmakers in the spotlight.

Not to be confused with the upcoming Jewish Film Festival, Berlin’s Israeli Film Festival focuses on painting a pluralistic picture of life in the Jewish-majority state. A collection of 40 films — many in their European premiere — showcase independent Israeli filmmakers of all backgrounds, nicely echoing the growing presence of young Israeli artists in Berlin.

Opening with Alice, an award-winning drama about the dark chaos of a psychiatric nurse’s life, the festival’s three-day programme is chock-a-block with highlights. Reminiscent of Jim Jarmusch’s early works, Not In Tel Aviv by Nony Gefen is a clever surreal piece playing out in black and white. Poignant features Six Acts and Youth deal with the turmoils of adolescents today, contrasted to the experimental humorous work by documentarian couple Dan and Noit Geva.

Also a selection of queer shorts and shorts by students of the renowned Sapir College. ‘Filmmakers in Focus’ presents the work of Berliner Daniel Carsenty. Many screenings to be attended by actors and directors.
