Love Steaks: Wry humour and (a little too much) frantic dialogue

Director Jakob Lass' award-winning directorial debut follows an oddball love story at an Ostsee resort. ★★★

Lass bagged a swathe of awards for his debut feature, a darkly romantic comedy of errors involving masseur Clemens thrust into an eccentric cohort of employers at an exclusive Ostsee resort; where his naïveté is seized upon by Lara, an obnoxiously endearing chef on a tightrope of self-destruction an alcoholism.

The frantic dialogue and dogmatic camera work loose freshness along the way, ditto the dramatically hip soundtrack, but strong performances and moments of wry humour muddle through at least some of the clichés. ★★★
