An offspring of Italian filmmaking aristocracy, Argento’s brightly rendered story of nine-year-old Aria who falls into a net of neglect as her artiste parents divorce has encouraged apparently unfounded and largely redundant autobiographical assumptions. This is Aria’s story, and it stands alone as a tale of redemption via narrative in which Salerno plays the character with such endearing precocity that we’re quite happy to accept her burlesque world and warring parents as projections of a confused but colourful mind.
Incompresa (Missverstanden) | Directed by Asia Argento (Italy, France 2014) with Giulia Salerno, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Gabriel Garko. Starts January 22
