One of the beautiful facets of Berlin’s sprawling cinema scene is that on any given week, cinephiles and casual viewers alike can stumble across not just a hidden gem or unturned film stone, but a whole national cinematic oeuvre.

Expect an intricate tapestry of formally innovative, expansive films.

One can be immersed in a new culture and history, reimagined for the big screen. This is especially true of Cinema Unseen: The Hidden Screen of Yemen. Teaming up with the Goethe Institute Cairo, Yemen Art Base and Al Yamaniah, the Yemen Creative Hubs project presents a night of short Yemeni films, showcasing up-and-coming young filmmakers whose work tackles the theme of ‘Al Dar’ (Arabic for “homeland”).

Expect an intricate tapestry of formally innovative, expansive films – loving odes to and insights into the land of Yemen across eight diverse films.

Screenings will be followed by a 45-minute panel discussion with two Berlin-based notables, Yemeni investigative journalist and producer Yousra Ishaq and filmmaker Osama Khaled.

Get to know Yemen and perhaps find your new favourite pocket of national cinema – and bonus, everything will have English subtitles.
