It’s time to rock the doc: the Dokumentale media festival is highlighting some of their favourite cuts of 2024 in a summer special preview to their October programme. These hand-picked gems span the genre and are bolstered by talks and panel discussions that reflect on the many worlds represented in the films on offer.
Among some of the flicks shown will be Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg, a documentary on the life of the multidisciplinary artist, muse, model and mother known in part for rolling with The Rolling Stones. Audiences will also get the Berlin premiere of The Making of a Japanese, a stunning documentary that shows how different the schooling system is in Japan and what is expected of Japanese children in their society by following 1st and 6th graders at a public elementary school in Tokyo for a year.
There’s also the German premiere of Nomad Solitude, a look at the alternative lifestyle of Americans living out of their cars (akin to Chloé Zhao’s award-winning Nomadland) and Son of the Mullah, about an Iranian journalist clashing with the corruption of the regime.
There’s a lot more on offer, too, so sit back and let these documentaries take you elsewhere this summer.
