At 3:30am on Monday, February 9, police were alerted about the discovery of a body on a park bench at the playground in Altenhoferstraße in Lichtenberg. When they arrived, it quickly became clear that a violent crime had taken place.

Photos from the investigation show a park bench with blood frozen into the snow beneath it. This is where the murdered woman was found early yesterday morning.

Police state that the 40-year-old woman, who was from Ukraine, succumbed to “her upper body injuries”. Also at the crime scene, there was a backpack on the bench, and a thermos and e-cigarette scattered in the snow.

The playground has since been cordoned off as the homicide commission investigate. Today, they arrested a suspect, a 46-year-old man, also from Ukraine.

Investigators assume that the victim and the alleged perpetrator knew each other, but the nature of their relationship remains the subject of the investigation.

Of the murder, one nearby resident told Berliner Morgenpost, “We have been living here for some time. This is unusual. There has never been anything like this here.”
