What a storm: Berlin hit by violent rain and winds

It didn’t last long, but it was quite a storm. Berlin was hit by a snap storm on Monday evening as strong winds and heavy rain tore through the capital. The fire brigade was called out to 385 weather related emergencies, continuing their work of clearing fallen trees, removing debris from tram lines and securing overhead electricity lines until the early hours of Tuesday morning.

In Marienfelde, parts of the roof of a warehouse collapsed under the weight of masses of water, and in Prenzlauer Berg a tree fell onto the raised wires of a tramline. Traffic lights across the city failed and, in Brandenburg, two people were taken to the hospital after a tree collapsed onto their moving car.

Images shared on social media showed the storm and flash flooding all across the city. The S-Bahn also reported delays and cancellations throughout the network, although normal service was resumed at 3.30am on Tuesday morning.
