Hundreds celebrate weed legalisation at Brandenburger Tor
Crowds gathered to celebrate the legalisation of cannabis by Brandenburger Tor on Monday night. According to reporting by rbb, police estimated around 1,500 people attended.
Smokers lit up as the clock struck 12am on Monday 1, April. “The Brandenburg Gate was pretty much in fog,” said Henry Plottke, a member of the Berlin branch of the German Cannabis Association (DHV).
Another celebration took place on Warschauer Brücke in Friedrichshain. There, activists from the Cannabis Museum and the umbrella organisation of German Cannabis Social clubs (CSCD) openly smoked joints to honour the occasion. Director of the Cannabis Museum Steffen Geyer called the legalisation of weed in Germany “the fulfilment of a long dream.”
As of Monday, people over the age of 18 are allowed to carry up to 25 grams of cannabis with them without penalty. They’re also allowed to store up to 50 grams at home and grow 3 female cannabis plants for their own consumption.
Weed can be freely consumed in public, but there are exceptions. Smoking isn’t permitted within 100 metres of children’s and youth facilities like schools, or in the immediate vicinity of minors. Consuming in bars, clubs and biergärten should be regulated by the venues themselves. Free sale of weed, as is allowed in many US states, is still prohibited.
