The intersection of Greifswalder Straße and Straße am Friedrichshain is completely closed due to the rupture of a water pipe, as was announced by the Berliner Wasserbetriebe in a press release yesterday. Straße am Friedrichshain is closed from house number 35, and access from Greifswalder or Otto-Braun is also not possible.
According to the Wasserbetriebe, damage to a 25cm-thick supply line from 1968 was found yesterday morning, and the pipe leaked onto parts of the roadway. However, the surrounding houses are not affected, and their water supply is secured. Berliner Wasserbetriebe announced, “The water companies are on site to repair the damage, but due to the weather, we cannot yet say when the road can be restored.”
The disruption comes on a day when Berlin faces transport chaos. As the BVG is on strike and icy conditions continue to make driving, biking and even walking difficult, empty ghost trams will tour the city without taking passengers so that overhead cables don’t freeze over. The water pipe rupture on Greifswalder Straße only adds to today’s transport mess.
