Joe Biden is coming to Berlin

In just over two weeks time, US President Joe Biden will make an official two-day visit to Berlin. According to information from the White House, his arrival is set for October 10, with meetings set for representatives from Germany’s federal government the next day, October 11.

This trip will be Biden’s first bilateral visit to Germany as President. He has made a few unofficial stops to refuel his plane or attend a G7 summit, but he has paid no working or state visit during his Presidency. On October 13, Biden will leave the country, taking an onward journey to Angola.

Biden’s predecessor, Donald Trump, also made no working visit to Germany during his year presidency, which will make Biden’s visit the first official stay in the country by a US President since Barack Obama paid a call on then-Chancellor Angela Merkel as part of his farewell tour in November 2016. Obama and Merkel had a friendly relationship, with the former president also visiting the long-serving German premiere more recently, meeting up for a fancy dinner in Schöneberg.
