U Nollendorfplatz is an important hub for the BVG. It is the only station in the city where the U1 to U4 lines come together. However, from today, only the U2 will continue as usual.

An extensive renovation of the ceiling will take place at Nollendorfplatz. As the BVG describes, the work will be a “concrete renovation of the false ceiling between the lower and middle platform level”.

Nollendorfplatz station is over 100 years old, so the old building must be strengthened before the damage leads to further problems. The planned budget for the renovation is €4.3 million, and it is expected to last for four months, until May 10.

This time estimate accounts for the space restrictions within the station, which cannot accommodate large machines, meaning workers will have to transport rubble by hand via the stairs from the lower station level to outside.

During this time, as the line runs above ground at the station, only the U2 will run its entire route, making it the only line still running between Wittenbergplatz and Gleisdreieck. That means that the U1, U3 and U4 will be affected.

The U1 will only run between Uhlandstraße and Wittenbergplatz. The U3 will run from Krumme Lanke and Spichernstraße as well as Gleisdreieck and Warschauer Straße. The U4, which usually runs between Nollendorfplatz and Innsbrucker Platz, will be discontinued completely during the renovation.

Longer trains will help to accommodate these changes, and a replacement bus service will run between Wittenbergplatz and Spichernstraße for the U3 and between Wittenbergplatz and Innsbrucker Platz for the U4.
