U-Bahn surfing: Accident leaves 18 year-old with life-threatening injuries in Friedrichshain
On Monday afternoon, shortly before 16:00, witnesses at Warschauer Straße U-Bahn station alerted authorities after they saw three young people lying on the roof of a train. Shortly after the train left the station, one of the three got caught in a metal scaffold and was knocked down onto the tracks. Rescue workers located the 18-year old victim and brought him to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.
Traffic was stopped at the location between 15:55 and 16:45. The other two young people escaped undetected.
U-Bahn surfing is a well-known phenomenon in Berlin, and it been the cause of several deaths of young people. Just last year, a 14-year-old was critically injured and a 19-year-old killed when attempting to ride atop moving trains.
