Türkiye knock out Austria to set up historic quarter-final in Berlin on Saturday

When the final whistle blew for the Austria-Türkiye game on Tuesday evening, no one in Berlin had any doubt about who had come out on top. Fireworks, car horns, and huge cheers sounded out all across the city, continuing late into the night, after Türkiye recorded a remarkable victory which will send them into the quarter finals against the Netherlands. Best of all? That game will be played in Berlin, at the Olympiastadion on Saturday night.

Yesterday’s game was not on free-to-air TV in Germany, but was watched by 23,000 fans in the public viewing areas around the Reichstag and the Brandenburg Gate – as well as countless improvised showings in Spätis across the city. The Netherlands – Türkiye game will surely create perhaps the best atmosphere for any game so far in the tournament – fans of both teams have been out in force on their respective match days – but there will be no question as to who gets more support in Berlin. On Saturday, it will be like a home game for Turkey in Berlin.
