Berlin transport authority announces solution for €29 ticket
Monday, 16 December
Berlin’s budget crunch has claimed another victim: the beloved €29 ticket. With the announced end of the €29 ticket last month, many questions remained unanswered. What would the transition look like? Was the planned cancellation date of January 1st at all realistic? Now it looks like the state transport authority has created a plan for the transition period.
As of Wednesday, 11 December, no new €29 ticket subscriptions can be purchased. However, all existing ticket holders will automatically have their €29 tickets upgraded to the nationwide Deutschlandticket for the rest of their subscription length. The upgrade comes with no extra charge for the existing ticket holders, as the state of Berlin will pay the price difference until the subscription expires.

For those who signed up for the €29 before 10 December, the one-year contract period will not begin until January. The Senate will then have to subsidise these tickets until the end of 2025. But be aware: from January 2025, the Deutschlandticket increases in price from its initial €49 to €58.
Any ticket holders who want to terminate their €29 ticket despite the automatic and essentially free upgrade can cancel their contracts without replacement.
“There will therefore be no disadvantages or costs for the remaining term of the existing contract for Berlin subscription customers,” said the Senate Department for Transport. “Only after the end of the respective minimum term of the previous Berlin subscription will 58 euros per month be due, unless the contract is terminated.”
