A downpour of freezing rain that occurred late last night has caused extreme icy conditions in Berlin this morning. Numerous accidents have been reported by the emergency services.
There are traffic obstructions throughout the city, with trams completely suspended due to ice on the overhead lines. As the ice is removed, BVG expect to gradually resume service.
The U-Bahn is also affected. The U3 is not running between Breitenbachplatz and Krumme Lanke, and the U2 is not running between Wittenbergplatz and Potsdamer Platz, as well as between Pankow and Alexanderplatz.
The buses do not seem to be as affected, although commuters should be prepared for delays due to icy conditions on the road. Drivers should also expect traffic jams, especially on the A100. Berlin police have asked motorists to “please adapt your behaviour to road conditions” and unnecessary cycling is discouraged.
The weather conditions also mean that garbage collection will not take place today, and parks and castles remain closed, including the Charlottenburg and Sanssouci palaces. Flight delays were also reported at BER airport. You can find updates throughout the day via the BVG app.
