At around 9:30 this morning, a tram derailed and crashed into a power pole by the Arnimstraße stop in the Neu-Hohenschönhausen district of Lichtenberg. The impact, which occurred while the tram was navigating a curve leading off Wartenberg Straße, tore a side of the vehicle open.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and found 20 people injured, three of them seriously though none critically. Twelve of the injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the scene of the accident has been cordoned off so that experts may determine the reason for the derailment.
As a result of the accident, tram lines M5 and M17 are not running between Gehrenseestraße and Falkenberg. A replacement bus service will be provided on the route.
