Three strikes and BER’s out: Airport workers demand better pay
It’s the third strike to affect Berlin transportation in a week. Last weekend, German trains and the Berlin S-Bahn were out of service as the GDL union continued their dispute with Deutsche Bahn. On Monday, BVG workers announced they would walk out this Friday as they begin their own round of negotiations. And now we have a third strike of the week, as security staff at BER demand an extra €2.80 in hourly pay.
The action began early on Thursday morning, with an airport spokesperson confirming that all of the 170 scheduled take-offs had been cancelled. And Berlin is not the only city affected: employees in aviation security in Hamburg, Bremen, Hanover, Cologne, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf all enacted similar disruptions. Verdi, the union representing the affected workers, has said the demand for higher wages has been necessitated by a number of factors, including the effects of inflation. The strike will continue until 23.59 on Thursday night.
