Temperatures to drop to minus 14

The traffic information centre has warned of below-freezing temperatures and slippery conditions as cold weather hits Berlin in full.

Today, the weather in Berlin is icy yet calm, however, predictions for the weekend appear more extreme. From tomorrow, the German Weather Service (DWD) has predicted that temperatures will fall to minus 10 degrees and on Saturday, an estimated temperature of minus 14 degrees has been announced.

In such weather, Berliners should plan their travel in advance. Snowy conditions can always disturb the running of the BVG, due to snow being blown into switches of the S-Bahn and an increased risk of rail breakages.

To stay safe in Berlin, it is recommended to maintain functioning heating and power supply and keep a well-stocked fridge, if possible. But such cold weather is life-threatening for the homeless, who are reminded that if they need a bed, they can get one, according to the social administration for homeless assistance in winter.

If you notice a homeless person who may be in need, you can politely offer them help, but if they are noticeably in distress or danger, you should dial the emergency number 112 or 110.
