Taco Bell and Krispy Kreme come to Berlin; Gorillas leave

Big news in the world of Berlin fast food today as the city looks set to welcome two US franchises, but also to bid farewell to Gorillas, the grocery delivery service who came to prominence during the pandemic.

The two fast food chains set to arrive in Berlin are the Mexican fast food chain Taco Bell, and Krispy Kreme doughnuts. There are apparently ten locations planned for Berlin, with the first Taco Bell to open in July or August. So far, the franchise has a presence in Germany only at US army bases: the Wiesbaden, Sprangdahlem and Ramstein barracks all have their own Taco Bells restaurants. Krispy Kreme also has a European presence in France, Switzerland, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, the Berlin founded company Gorillas are leaving Germany. The company which got so much attention as we were all stuck at home during the pandemic was sold to Turkish company Getir a year and a half ago for one billion dollars, but it has struggled since. New competition following the pandemic, combined with decreased demand has meant the company has had to continuously cut jobs over recent years. As they close operations in Germany, Getir will now begin to focus more on its home country of operations in Türkiye.
