“Stop the Genocide”: Protest with hidden bluetooth speakers at Stabi library
In video circulating online, visitors and staff at Berlin’s State Library on Unter den Linden walk around the floor of the building trying where the noises are coming from. Hidden among the bookshelves, unknown activists have secreted bluetooth speakers set to broadcast protest messages, such as “Your history is repeating”, “Stop the genocide” and “Free Palestine”.
The protest took place last Friday afternoon and, according to a statement by the group responsible, was aimed at “addressing the German state’s complicity” with Israel’s war on Gaza, as well as the “neo-Fascism criminalisation of solidarity with Palestine.”
Since then, employees of the Stabi have issued their own statement, distancing themselves from the action, writing that: “We do not tolerate anti-Israel propaganda in our buildings. We are horrified by Hamas’ brutal attack on Israel on October 7th and we declare our solidarity with the Israeli people.”
