No end in sight for Stargarder Straße cycle path hazards

Stargarder Straße, a cycling artery in Prenzlauer Berg, remains a dangerous thoroughfare. Despite promises stretching back to 2023, the much-needed bollards  meant to deter dangerous wrong-way drivers  are still nowhere in sight.

Originally slated for a mid-2025 installation near the Gethsemanekirche, the project faces yet another delay. The Pankow district office, citing “internal reviews” and “staffing shortages”, now vaguely states installation is “expected to take place before the end of this year”.

Adding to the uncertainty, the district is keeping tight-lipped on whether Stargarder Straße will become a diversion route during the upcoming Schönhauser Allee bridge demolition. Bollards could obstruct emergency services or traffic, but the Senate Transport Administration holds the ultimate say.

Compounding the traffic woes, 20-ton BVG replacement buses are set to rumble through  nearby Schönfließer Straße from 2027, threatening another planned traffic-calming “Kiezblock” near Arnimplatz.
