Several centimetres of snow blanket Berlin

Berlin woke up to a white blanketing of fresh snow this morning, with several centimetres piling up overnight. Frosty temperatures are expected to keep the streets icy through the weekend and into next week. Police have urged cyclists and drivers to be cautious on the slippery roads, though no increase in accidents has been reported so far.

The actual temperature hovers around 0°C, but a moderate easterly wind could make it feel as cold as -10°C to -15°C. While the wind is expected to ease in the coming days, temperatures will remain low, potentially dropping to -10°C on Sunday night. On the bright side, the snowfall may help improve Berlin’s air quality, which has been poor in recent days.

Meanwhile, workers from Berlin’s city cleaning service (BSR) are on strike Thursday and Friday. However, the Verdi union has reportedly agreed to maintain emergency winter services for essential measures.
