Schloßstraße U-Bahn station won’t be completed until the 2030s
Work to modernise the U9 – the main underground stop on Steglitz’s busiest shopping street – began in 2016, only to grind to a halt when Berlin’s heritage office placed the 1974 station under protection. Since then, passengers have been left with bare concrete walls and exposed wiring.
The latest update from the Senate’s transport administration offers little comfort. The original lift location turned out to be unworkable, forcing a redesign. “A detailed cost and time plan is not available currently,” said state secretary for transport Arne Herz, adding only that the lift should open “in the 2030s.” No further details were given – and “2030s” covers quite a lot of calendar.
There is, however, a small glimmer of optimism: now that a new location for the lift has been agreed, the Senate “does not expect further delays or cost increases.” Passengers, meanwhile, will have to continue navigating the station’s ramshackle aesthetic for the foreseeable future.
