Raccoons cause trouble

Buildings and technical facilities have been reporting more and more damage from raccoons in Berlin. The Senate stated, “The authorities are increasingly receiving complaints from the population about conflicts with raccoons.”

They then outlined a long list of locations where racoons have caused damage to roofs and other parts of buildings, including barracks, parks, Charité, BSR buildings, medical practices, high school centers, schools, combined heat and power plants, company premises, district foresters, swimming pools, waterworks and residential buildings.

All year round, raccoon hunting is possible in Berlin, as it is in many other federal states. From 2020 to 2025, 83 raccoons were killed in Germany’s capital. This was partly due to protecting sensitive infrastructure or due to hygiene concerns, the Senate insisted. However, these killings do not reduce the racoon population, which continues to grow.
