The Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark in Prenzlauer Berg is currently under renovation to be converted into a public inclusion park, so that those with and without disabilities can play sports on an equal level. The modernized plan includes a new stadium with 20,000 seats.

The Senate Department for Urban Development, Construction and Housing announced on Tuesday that, as part of the construction, two eastern steel floodlights from 1987 have to be taken down. They will be blown up at 11 am today.

From 10am to 11:30 am, commuters can expect restrictions affecting traffic and the M10 tram line. Residents of the surrounding buildings have been asked to stay in their apartments, having been informed in advance.

The explosion will be announced by acoustic signals: one long sound to warn, two short ones immediately before the ignition and three short ones to give the green light after the explosion. In the immediate vicinity, there will be a sound pressure of up to 100 decibels

“The explosions make a loud, short bang,” it was warned. “The sound can sound like a nearby thunderstorm or fireworks.”

While two will be taken down, the other two will be preserved, seeing as they were erected as part of the stadium reconstruction for the 750th anniversary of Berlin and give the Jahnsportpark its characteristic appearance.
