Glitch in postal voting: Berlin-based student flies back to USA to vote in person

Lexi Harder, a Berlin-based American student, faced a last-minute voting crisis. Her mail-in ballot was inexplicably returned to her address in Germany, just days before the US election. Determined to exercise her democratic right, Harder booked a spontaneous flight back to Pennsylvania, spending over €800 for the one-way ticket. With the significant cost and inconvenience, Harder emphasised the importance of her vote in the swing state. She successfully cast her ballot on Tuesday. Harder is among the 21,000 US citizens living in Berlin and Brandenburg.

Over the last 48 hours, the US election was followed with great interest in Berlin. All night long on Tuesday, Babylon Berlin screened election coverage under the optimistic motto “Democrats Abroad”. Although the election results have not yet been called, a Trump victory looks almost certain.
