Police raid Friedrichshain properties as hunt for ex-RAF members continues

Last week, Berlin police arrested 65-year-old Daniela Klette (former member of the radical terrorist group RAF) who had been living underground for some thirty years. But authorities were still on the lookout for two other ex-RAF members: Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg.

Now the manhunt continues, with police launching raids of several locations in Friedrichshain, including properties on Corinthstraße and Grünberger Straße. Police have appealed specifically to 55-year-old Burkhard Garweg to turn himself in, emphasising a possible mitigation of the fugitive’s jail time.

Authorities have seized a trailer home where Garweg had been living. The trailer was parked on a plot of land in Friedrichshain which is home to members of Berlin’s leftist and alternative communities. Residents there have denied any knowledge of Garweg’s true identity, and have criticised the police’s actions, condemning how authorities have detained several residents of the trailer site “under the pretext of establishing their identities in order to intimidate and question them.” (according to a press release published on Monday).

On Monday evening, the search continued at a student dormitory on Friedrichshain’s Straße der Pariser Kommune, but authorities have not yet released any details about the investigation of this property.
